In 1905, Frank Lloyd Wright completed a residential estate that would become one of the most important works of his career. Buffalo's Martin House is a seminal Prairie House and a rare Wright design that incorporates multiple structures for an extended family. Built between 1903 and 1905, the Martin House was designed by acclaimed American architect Frank Lloyd Wright as the city home for Buffalo business executive Darwin D. Martin and his family.

Frank Lloyd Wright drew from his plans for a cultural complex in Baghdad, when he designed the Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium at Arizona State University in Tempe. Wright died in 1959, before construction of the hemicycle design was begun. The Barton House, the first structure to be built on the Martin property, sets an important style precedent for the rest of the complex. Of particular significance are the nearly 400 art glass windows throughout the complex that act as light screens to visually connect exterior views with the spaces within. More patterns of art glass were designed for the Martin House than for any other of Wright’s Prairie Houses. The complex also includes a gardener's cottage, the last building completed. The design for Martin House includes a home for a succession of gardeners and their families who lived and worked on the estate. Completed in 1909, the Gardener’s Cottage represents the type of Prairie house developed by Wright to provide affordable and beautiful housing for all.

Today, the main house is thought to be one of the finest examples of Wright's Prairie Style. Tours of the site begin at the Toshiko Mori-designed visitor's center, a comfortable glass pavilion built in 2009 to bring the visitor into the world of Darwin D. Martin and the Martin complex of buildings. Wealthier and two years older than Wright, Darwin Martin became a lifelong patron and friend of the Chicago architect.

The so-called Samuel Freeman house is made from 12,000 concrete bricks, which incorporated sand from the hillside sloping down below it. These are assembled in the “textile block” style, which evokes the appearance of quilted stone. When Samuel and Harriet Freeman visited Hollyhock House, a Los Angeles home that Frank Lloyd Wright designed for the oil heiress Aline Barnsdall, they knew they wanted to live in one like it. They ponied up $10,000 (which eventually swelled to more than double that) and commissioned Wright to build them a house in the Hollywood Hills.

Approximately 27,000 blocks were used in the construction, which were cast by hand, on-site, with an aluminum mold and made out of gravel, granite, sand (from the site) and water.
